TERI, formed in 1974 aims to create sustainable development projects, which utilize alternate sources of energy along with carrying benefits for the society through reliance on entrepreneurial skills for development. Currently it is operating in several parts of the world like North America, Europe and Asia with its headquarters being in India.
Under their project 'Lighting up a billion Lives (LABL) TERI aims to enable energy impoverished communities across the globe to access clean and reliable sources of lighting through solar technologies to improve their quality of life. A female micro entrepreneur is chosen from each village where a solar charging station of 50 lanterns is set up. She then either rents out solar lanterns every evening at a very affordable cost or sells them to individual households as per the need arises.
Buksh Foundation has partnered with TERI, India to emulate a similar business model in Pakistan. The project called "Ligthting a Million Lives' will illuminate 5000 villages over a period of 5 years and benefit a million people in the process.
